Is there anything more British than a scone? No matter how you pronounce it, we love a scone, so when thinking about what food we’d serve up at a royal wedding street party there was no doubt in what we’d bring to the table.

So far, the details we’ve heard about Meghan and Harry’s wedding have been far from traditional, opting to invite 1200 inspirational members of the public to Windsor Castle plus ditching a guest list of political leaders and a traditional fruit wedding cake. So, we thought – why not put a twist on a classic? Reflecting the couples’ rebellious side whilst still representing what it means to be Britishburlap throw pillow covers, we’ve come up with some quirky ideas on how to serve up your scones for a street party…

mothers day gifts from son

Kick off your party by combining two British summer classics: Pimm’s and scones. Make your classic scones as usual, but swap your jam and clotted cream for Pimm’s soaked strawberries and oranges, and boozy double cream. Simple, sweet and delicious, these scones will have your guests coming back for more.

Sweet and tangy, a lemon drizzle scone will add a bit of zest to your party. Add the zest of 2 lemons to your scone mixture for a taste of lemon and then mix 3 tablespoons of icing sugar, the zest of 1 lemon, 1 teaspoon of white sugar and enough lemon juice to make a thick but pourable icing. Drizzle the icing over your scones and then scatter with sugar and lemon zest, before serving with homemade lemon curd (or clotted cream if you’ve had enough lemon)!

Once again taking inspiration from a classic British dessert, give your scone a twist by using the flavours of a Bakewell Tart. For your filling, start by pouring 200ml double cream and 1 tsp of almond essence into a bowl and whisk until just stiff. Spread your sliced scones with the almond cream and then top with plenty of cherry jam and flaked almonds.

Strawberries are not only the perfect topping for your scones but they taste delicious as part of the scone mixture! Just combine 115g of self-raising flour with ? teaspoon of baking powder and ? teaspoon of cinnamon in a bowl, and rub in 15g of butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add 15g of caster sugar with 70g of diced strawberries, and then gradually add enough milk to bring the mixture together as a dough. Lightly knead the dough and shape into scone-shaped balls. Preheat your oven to gas mark 7/220C and bake for 10-12 minutes. Once your scones are cooked and cooled, serve with clotted cream and strawberry jam for the perfect summer treat.

Please everyone with a DIY-scone station at your party. Simply make a big batch of scones and place them in a basket on a table with different fruits, toppings and spreads, allowing your guests to mix and match to create their perfect scone. Lemon curd, clotted cream, whipped cream, jam and honey are all popular options and will go deliciously with a number of fresh summer fruits and berries. Make things easier for your guests by creating a chalkboard sign telling them what to do and label your scones, spreads and topping with little flags so that everyone knows what is what.
