The humble headboard has the potential to transform the look of your bedroom without the need for spending large sums of money. With so many shapes, sizes, material finishes and styles on currently on the market, there is one out there for you. A headboard can be minimal, period styled, functional or fun and will make a real feature of a tired old bedburlap throw pillow covers, giving instant impact to the surrounding space.

Where to start? For a strong statement that fits into most schemes you won’t go wrong with a wrought iron headboard. Visually impacting yet very versatile they are a safe but standout option. Left blank one will hold its own focus, but they offer much scope for customisation. You can dress up a wrought iron headboard with additional fabrics and décor to weave them into the design of the room, you can also paint or varnish one or roughly sand it to create a more rustic look.

Leather headboards can create a sophisticated look for your bedroom area, making it look expensive and tasteful. They really draw attention to themselves as the central focus of the room- meaning other elements don't need to be as strong as with some other styles. This will save you lots of money which would normally have to go on expensive room decoration like ornaments and paintings. Many of these headboards are large and imposing adding real glamour to bedrooms. Minimal fans will love the simple lines and neat silhouette of a large leather headboard and will really feel the benefit of a little warmth in a traditionally cool style. Of course smaller options are also available if it is a much more refined and subtle look you aspire to.

If you are having trouble finding a style that fits into your existing decor, consider creating your own headboard. One of the simplest DIY jobs you will ever take on, a customised headboard allows you to choose a fabric finish that matches your curtains or duvet set, ensuring a harmonious finish. To create your headboard, first have your local DIY store cut a length of chipboard to the size you want.

Next, purchase some thick foam lengths and glue them to the board, trimming them to size once attached. Then purchase some wholesale fabric of your choice and fold it around your headboard in a neat hospital bed style then staple in place at the back. Not only is creating your own headboard incredibly cost saving, if you ever tire of the look, you can remove the current upholstery and recover the headboard to match your new style. It's a simple process that doesn't take long and only requires a good staple gun and a pair of scissors to remove excess cloth.

If all else fails, you can work with something function, like bookcase headboards. These will surround the bed and give you quite a bit of storage space for anything from books and magazines to a telephone and photo frames that are to be displayed in your bedroom. The only real downside to this kind of headboard is the need to dust it frequently, since the shelving is exposed. However, if you just brush over it daily with a duster, it will not become a painful chore. Best of all, you not only have a headboard that is a great focal point but also lots of space for other things that you keep in your bedroom.

Have you ever wanted to add burlap curtains to your décor, but didn’t know how to make them yourself? These curtains are the easiest panels I’ve ever made. Seriously. If you plan it right, you can use the full width of the bolt and eliminate the need?for?side hems. When I made these last summer I decided to use half the width of the bolt per panel which made each panel about 30″ wide. But, if you are going for a quick timeframe, and like the panel fullness, go ahead and use the full width of the bolt (~60″). They would look significantly more full and fill up the room better.
